Professional Bio

Dr. María José Navarrete Talloni is a Veterinary Anatomic Pathologist with a career defined by her dedication to science, education, and community engagement. She earned her DVM from the University of Chile and completed a Master in Preventive Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis in 2006. That same year, she received a Marie Curie Fellowship to pursue a PhD and advanced pathology training at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover in Germany. In 2010, she returned to Chile to join Universidad Austral de Chile as an Assistant Professor. Nearly a decade later, she became Associate Professor and Assistant Dean at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in Saint Kitts and Nevis. As of July 2025, she serves as Associate Professor of Anatomical Pathology and Assistant Dean at Long Island University in New York.
Her research, grounded in a One Health approach, addresses antimicrobial resistance, emerging infectious diseases, invasive species, and forensic entomology, bridging disciplines and communities with a focus on inclusion and impact. For over 20 years, Dr. Navarrete has championed science communication and outreach, especially for underrepresented groups. She leads bilingual initiatives that make science accessible and inspiring, particularly for children.
Outside academia, she advocates for women in science, environmental conservation, and health equity. She serves on the Board of Directors of Alerce NGO in Chile, is active in Women in Pathology (ACVP), and mentors aspiring veterinarians through Pawsibilities Vet Med. She was named a Social Change Fellow by Walden University in 2022 and is a proud alumna of the Vital Voices Visionaries Program (2025).
