This lecture will summarise and review the standard medical work-up and management of protein losing nephropathy in dogs as defined in the ACVIM proteinuria consensus statements. In addition, we will discuss some of novel therapeutics and how they may apply to our patients. The emphasis of the lecture will be on medical management of PLN.  

Learning Objectives:

  1. Be familiar with the recommended standard diagnostic and therapeutic protocols for all canine patients with proteinuria.
  2. Be familiar with management of expected and unexpected consequences of protein losing nephropathy.
  3. Introduce some novel diagnostic and therapeutic interventions that are currently used in human medicine.
  4. Introduce a practical approach to assess and manage response to therapy.

After graduating from the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada, Dr. Ross completed a Small Animal Internship at the University of Minnesota. She remained at the University of Minnesota to complete an Internal Medicine Residency combined with a PhD in Nephrology/Urology. After serving as an Assistant Clinical Professor for 2-years she moved to the University of California Veterinary Medical Center in San Diego to complete a Fellowship in Renal Medicine/Hemodialysis. She remained with UC Davis and developed a comprehensive Nephrology/Urology and Extracorporeal therapy service in San Diego. After 15 years in sunny California, she has finally returned home to Eastern Canada as a professor at The University of Prince Edward Island where she is realizing her dream of teaching. Her specific research interests include; early chronic kidney disease, minimally invasive procedures and extracorporeal therapies. She currently resides in Charlottetown, PEI with her 4 cats and 1 husband.
