Non-Surgical Management of Canine Degenerative Joint Disease
This session discusses the diagnosis and non-surgical management of canine DJD. It will cover multimodal management options, the use of new anti-NGF monoclonal antibodies, the role of rehabilitation therapy, new regenerative therapy options, and other treatments available to practitioners. Surgical management is only briefly mentioned as the focus of this is a practical every day approach to treatment. This session is for all small animal practitioners who see arthritic canine patients in their practice. Osteoarthritis treatment in cats is also discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Attendees will apply knowledge of the causes of osteoarthritis to treatment regimens.
  2. We will discuss and learn about the multimodal approach to the treatment of osteoarthritis and new treatment options for DJD.
  3. We will discuss the role of physical therapy and rehabilitation medicine in the treatment of OA and regenerative therapy options for treating OA.

Dr. Michael Jaffe is an Associate Professor of Small Animal Surgery and Service Chief of Small Animal Surgery at Mississippi State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Jaffe is a graduate of the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine. Upon graduation from vet school, he practiced as a primary care veterinarian in St. Joseph, MO and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He then completed a 1-year companion animal medicine and surgery internship and a 3-year small animal surgery residency at LSU where he also received his Master’s degree. Dr. Jaffe practiced in specialty surgical practice in Bloomfield Hills, MI; Mesa, AZ; and Glendale, AZ. He entered academia as part of the founding faculty at Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine and remained there for 4 years. Dr. Jaffe became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2002, and a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner in 2017.
