Ticks in Cattle Pastures: A Focus on the Asian Longhorned Tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis)
Ticks are an emerging concern for cattle producers, with several tick species occurring in pastures and along pasture edges. This talk will review the biology, identification, habitat, and seasonal activity of important cattle-associated ticks, with a particular focus on the invasive Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis). We will discuss how to recognize Asian longhorned ticks, where they are most likely to be found, potential concerns for cattle health, and approaches for monitoring and managing ticks in pasture-based production systems.

Dr. Allen Fournier, DVM, FADD worked in large animal private practice for 21 years and was a practice owner for 15 years. Dr. Fournier has been a field veterinarian for the past 5 years covering 7 counties in Northwestern NYS.
Ken Wise is a Senior Extension Associate and Livestock IPM Coordinator with the Cornell Integrated Pest Management Program. Based at the Cornell Hudson Valley Research Laboratory, he works with livestock producers, researchers, and industry partners to develop and promote practical integrated pest management strategies for livestock pests. His work focuses on pests affecting dairy and beef cattle, including flies and ticks, with an emphasis on monitoring, biological control, and sustainable management practices. Ken also conducts applied research and provides Extension education on emerging pest issues, including the Asian longhorned tick and its management in cattle pastures.
