This course is designed to give participants knowledge and best practices for surviving an active shooter event. Participants will gain insight into the mindset of attackers & common warning signs / risk factors of those who commit attacks.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will identify and be able to explain the three (3) stages of disaster response in the human brain.
- Participants will identify and have a working knowledge of the “Run, Hide, Fight” responses to an active shooter event.
- Participants will learn best practices for notifying and safely engaging with emergency responders and law enforcement during and immediately after an attack.

Police Officer Michael Rybak - Officer Rybak is a certified NYS School Resource Officer and NYS Juvenile Officer assigned to support the West Seneca Central School District. He is a NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services Police Instructor and is a lead instructor at the Erie County Law Enforcement Training Academy. Officer Rybak assists school administration with developing strategic safety plans and trains faculty and staff in emergency preparedness that includes active shooter response.
Detective Anthony Ferrucci - Detective Ferrucci is a NYS Police Firearms Instructor, a NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services Police Instructor, and a certified NYS School Resource Officer. Detective Ferrucci is assigned to the West Seneca Police Family Offense Unit. Detective Ferrucci investigates crimes against children and works closely with school district officials and current school resource officers when threats to harm school children are made. Detective Ferrucci has a thorough knowledge of best practices and tactics in dealing with dangerous situations and presents to both police and community groups.
