Neurolocalization – Lightening Round!! and Neurologic Manifestations of Metabolic Disease – The Great Imposters

Neurology can be a particularly daunting specialty and the goal of this lecture is to lessen “neurophobia” and to help the practitioner get more comfortable with neurolocalization which is the goal of the first lecture – Neurolocalization – Lightening Round. This lecture will focus on the neurolocalization challenge – Is it brain, spinal cord or neuromuscular? This lecture will focus on which neurologic signs fit with what neurolocalization and we will walk you through this process with video examples and discussion. The next lecture will encompass Neurologic Manifestations of Metabolic Disease – The Great Imposters. This lecture will focus on metabolic diseases that can present with neurologic manifestations that can be diagnosed in your practice and do not necessarily need further imaging with MRI or referral. This lecture will be case based and the goal is to highlight how the practitioner can diagnose these cases in private practice and how to treat accordingly. Let’s have fun and shed some light on neurology!!

Karen Kline, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)

Karen Kline, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology) is an associate professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Washington State University CVM. Her appointment at WSU is 75% and she also works at her home base of Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Portland, Oregon. She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University in 1989. Following veterinary school, she completed a rotating internship and well as a neurology residency at The Animal Medical Center in New York City. After her residency she was a clinical instructor in neurology at the University of Missouri CVM. In 1994, Dr. Kline became board certified in veterinary neurology through the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. From 1995 through 2008, Dr. Kline was an associate professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Iowa State College of Veterinary Medicine. While there, she obtained her Master of Science degree in veterinary pathology and completed her thesis on Immunohistochemical Differentiation of Canine Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases. She has been the Medical Director and associate neurologist at the Veterinary Specialty Center of Seattle and is currently an associate neurologist and past Medical Director at VCA Northwest Veterinary Specialists in Portland, Oregon. She has published multiple journal articles, has been an author in several veterinary textbooks and has spoken at local, national and international meetings. She obtained her certification in veterinary acupuncture in 2000. Dr. Kline brings with her a passion for teaching and clinical service. When not in the clinic, Dr. Kline enjoys the treasures of the pacific northwest as well as spending time with her husband Karl and their new rescue dog Karen.
