Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

This lecture will focus on the use of SGLT2 inhibitors to treat diabetes mellitus in cats and monitoring glycemic control  with continuous glucose monitors in cats and dogs. 

Learning Objectives:

    1. Identify feline patients that could be good candidates for treatment with SGLT2 inhibitors (Bexacat, Senvelgo) & propose a monitoring plan.

    2. Describe the advantages & limitations of monitoring glycemic control with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM, Freestyle Libre) & how to use the data to modify insulin therapy.

    3. Identify potential applications of basal insulins (Toujeo, Degludec)

    Dr. Prieto grew up in Central New York State and attended the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences where she completed a BS in Biological Sciences. She entered the Combined DVM/PhD program at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007 earning her DVM degree in 2013 and PhD in Immunology in 2015. She completed a small animal rotating internship at the Veterinary Medical Center of CNY before returning to Cornell for a residency in small animal internal medicine completed in 2019.  Subsequently she was a postdoctoral associate in Dr. Loftus’ lab from 2019-2021 and was appointed Assistant Clinical Professor in 2021. She is board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
