This course introduces the basic principles of external beam radiation therapy (RT) in veterinary medicine. It covers common cancerous (neoplastic) and select non-cancerous (non-neoplastic) conditions in dogs and cats where RT can be a beneficial treatment option.

2. To list 3-4 specific neoplastic disease processes in dogs and cats where RT may be useful

Skylar Sylvester is a, ACVIM board-certified medical oncologist and assistant clinical professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is originally from New York state and attended veterinary school at Cornell University, completed a rotating internship in small animal medicine and surgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and medical oncology residency at Cornell. She is interested in all aspects of comprehensive oncologic care for companion animals, with a particular focus on improving outcomes for dogs with solid tumors, such as hemangiosarcoma. She lives in Ithaca with her husband, retired research hound Jewel, retired Philly street cat Wren, and pug named Oatmeal.
Dr. Tracy Gieger is a native of New Orleans and a graduate of Louisiana State University. She is a medical and radiation oncologist and has been a faculty radiation oncologist at Cornell since May 2025; prior to this, she spent 13 years at NC State University. Her research and teaching interests include feline medicine and uses of radiation therapy in cats, canine brain and nasal tumors, and using radiation therapy for treatment of non-neoplastic diseases. She loves cats, crafting cocktails, and cooking. She shares her home with three wonderful cats (Oliver Marshmallow, Mushroom, and Snowy) and a boyfriend.
