MMVD IN DOGS: RISK AWARENESS, EARLY DETECTION, AND MANAGEMENT FOR MORE LIFE TO LOVE
Myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) is one of the most common acquired heart diseases in dogs, and its proper management requires a clear understanding of diagnostic and medication strategies across different stages of the disease. MMVD can progress to congestive heart failure (CHF); however, intervention during the preclinical phase of MMVD can delay the onset of CHF in dogs. The goal of this program is to educate veterinarians on the latest diagnostic approaches and management recommendations based on the updated American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines for MMVD. Through this session, veterinarians will gain confidence in their approach to the disease across each stage. The program will provide a review of evidence-based management options, offering insights into their effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. This knowledge will help veterinarians make informed, stage-appropriate decisions to ensure optimal care for their canine patients.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore the prevalence, risk factors, and stages of myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) in dogs.
- Apply the latest American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of MMVD in dogs.
- Evaluate evidence-based management options to make informed, stage-appropriate decisions for improving patient outcomes.
CARDIOLOGY WORKSHOP
This interactive program will review what you need to know to diagnose and begin managing patients with heart disease from myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) before the onset of clinical signs. This session will will focus on the utilization of thoracic radiographs for staging MMVD in dogs, specifically vertebral heart score (VHS) and vertebral left atrial size (VLAS). Attendees will learn, based on staging, what treatment options are available, as well as the level of evidence of certain medications for dogs.
Learning Objectives:
- Review guidelines for diagnosing myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) Stage B2.
- Gain confidence in diagnosing MMVD Stage B2 using radiographic measurements.
- Evaluate study data of compounded pimobendan.
