Event Details

Presented by: Tina Sung, MA, VMD

This diabetes story focuses on the kidneys. After a quick review of the unique characteristics of feline diabetes mellitus and the associated risk factors, the course will introduce a new once-daily oral treatment for diabetic cats. A member of a new class of drugs called sodium-glucose cotransporter2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, velogliflozin exerts its action in the kidneys to increase excretion of glucose in the urine and lower blood glucose levels. The course will cover safety and effectiveness results from a pivotal field study to demonstrate how this medication will dramatically improve life for diabetic cats, their owners, and veterinarians.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review the distinct characteristics of feline diabetes.
  2. Understand the mode of action of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2)-inhibitors.
  3. Explore the effectiveness and safety data behind velagliflozin, the first once-daily oral liquid solution for feline diabetes.
  4. Learn about the features and benefits of velagliflozin.
