When integrative veterinarians talk about pain relief, they usually think about options such as herbal therapy, acupuncture, or chiropractic, as well as other more widely used methods. However, there are also nutritional supplements (AKA nutraceuticals) which can help. Some, such as DLPA, have a primary pain-relieving action. Others, such as antioxidants, play supportive roles such as decreasing inflammation associated with pain. It is also important to use the correct form of nutraceuticals for the best results. When properly added to a pain-relief program, nutraceuticals can boost the effects of more conventional analgesic therapies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review analgesic nutraceuticals
  2. Learn the best forms of nutraceuticals for analgesic effects
  3. Learn the best combinations of nutraceuticals to prevent unwanted side effects

Dr. Scanlan was first inspired to include nutritional supplements as part of her treatment regimen, when, as a senior in veterinary school, she saw the effects of an overdose of vitamin E in a cardiac patient. Nutraceuticals became a fundamental part of her practice, and led her into incorporating other areas of integrative medicine ending with 100 percent holistic practice. She has shared her findings at veterinary conferences, and is a consultant for the Alternative Medicine folder on VIN . Her chapter on Nutraceuticals will be appearing in the upcoming Integrative Veterinary Medicine issue of Elsevier’s Veterinary Clinics: Small Animal Practice. She has mostly retired from active practice and currently serves as special projects manager and RACE liaison for the College of Integrative Veterinary Therapies (CIVT).
