The focus of Chinese medicine is on strengthening physiologic defense systems and restoring balance to the body. A treatment is given with the understanding that the whole body will be affected rather than just a single system or organ. Equal importance is given to the body, mind and spirit; balance between all of these aspects is the ideal and represents health, therefore Chinese medical treatments are designed for each unique individual.

An understanding of the basic principles of Chinese Medicine is essential to the understanding of Chinese medicine and the use of Chinese herbs. These include: Yin-Yang theory, Five Element Theory, Fundamental Substances, Zang-Fu organs, the Channels, Causes of Disease, the Six Pathogenic Qi, the Eight Principles, Chinese Veterinary Examination, Veterinary Tongue and Pulse Diagnosis, Chinese Medicine Diagnostic Systems and Pattern Differentiation, and Development of a Chinese Veterinary Diagnosis and Treatment Plan. This lecture will give the basic foundation of understanding Chinese Medicine.

Learning Objectives:

1. To be exposed to the wealth of philosophical theory in Chinese Medicine.
2. To understand the use of these principles to treat disease dynamics.
3. To be able to use pulse qualities and tongue color for a diagnostic aid.
