Integrative Approach to Canine Cognitive Dysfunction (CCD)

Presented by: Curtis Dewey, DVM, MS, DACVIM (Neurology), DACVS

Following a brief overview of the pathophysiology of CCD (from both conventional and TCVM perspectives), this presentation will provide a detailed description of the various treatment options available for dogs with cognitive impairment. Such treatment options include various drugs and nutraceuticals (including Chinese herbals), as well as other modalities aimed at improving brain function, stimulating cognitive reserve, and reducing anxiety.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the underlying pathophysiology of CCD, including vascular compromise, β-amyloid deposition, and mitochondrial dysfunction as well as how these features correlate with TCVM diagnosis.
  2. Know characteristic clinical features of CCD, such as anxiety (particularly at night), decreased interaction with owners, confusion, vocalization, etc.
  3. Create a mental “toolbox” of various CCD treatment options, including drugs, nutraceuticals, regional treatments (e.g., acupuncture, laser) and environmental enrichment.
