Learners will review three major topics in small animal internal medicine and emergency/critical care, including localization of dyspnea, diagnosis & management of immune-mediated hemolytic, and diagnosis & treatment of various etiologies of chronic diarrhea in feline patients. Learners will be exposed to real life case examples to emphasize relevant pathophysiology, logical diagnostic approaches, and up-to-date therapeutic interventions.
Learning Objectives
Chronic Diarrhea in Cats
- To review relevant pathophysiology of diarrhea
- To discuss relevant diagnostic testing to determine the cause of chronic diarrhea in cats
- To discuss potential therapies for chronic diarrhea in cats
Localizing Dyspnea
- To review relevant pathophysiology of respiratory distress
- To identify a practical approach to the localizing dyspnea in a patient with respiratory distress
- To develop a logical and medically sound treatment plan for a dyspneic patient
Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia
- To review relevant pathophysiology of IMHA
- To identify a practical approach to the diagnosis of IMHA
- To develop a logical and medically sound treatment plan for a patient with IMHA

Dr. Christopher G. Byers is a practicing board-certified veterinary emergency & critical care and small animal internal medicine specialist. He received his BS degree in Animal Sciences from Colorado State University and his DVM from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Byers’ professional passions are mentoring and coaching veterinary students and colleagues in the areas of emergency & critical care, internal medicine, and communication skills. To that effect, he’s been privileged to travel around the globe, partnering with veterinary professionals dedicated to advancing animal health. Dr. Byers publishes a weekly blog called CriticalCareDVM.com. The goals of this passion project are to educate pet parents and promote the triad of care between pet owner, primary care doctor, and board-certified veterinary specialist.
