To Cut or Not to Cut? That is the Question: Dystocia and C-section in Dogs and Cats
This presentation will cover when to attempt medical management of dystocia, how to safely perform the C-section, and neonatal resuscitation. Timing of the elective C-section will also be covered, along with how to determine when it’s safe to cut without the bitch going into labor.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify the normal stages of parturition in the dog and cat and recognize signs of dystocia in these species.
2. How to appropriately manage a dystocia medically and identify risk factors for C-section.
3. How to safely perform a C-section in the dog and cat including anesthesia, surgical approach, and pain control.
4. Identify when it is safe to perform an elective C-section in breeds predisposed to dystocia.

Much Ado About Vulvar Discharge: Pyometra, Vaginitis, and More
This session will be a practical guide to assessing vulvar discharge. We will discuss diagnoses and differentials of unwanted discharge, as well as best practices in management and treatment of these diseases in dogs and cats.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe what normal discharge looks like and when it occurs in intact females’ reproductive cycles
2. Identify abnormal vulvar discharge in dogs and cats
3. Determine an appropriate diagnostic and treatment protocol for vaginitis and pyometra in dogs and cats.

Neonatology for Dummies: What’s Normal, and How Do You Fix What Isn’t
This presentation will discuss what’s normal for neonates; how to recognize illness; safe, effective treatments for caring for sick animals, including antibiotics, fluid support, and supplemental feeding; and care of orphan puppies and kittens.
Learning Objectives:
1. Identify normal physiology in neonates and describe how it differs from the adult
2. How to safely resuscitate a neonate following C-section or natural delivery
3. How to recognize a sick neonate and early risk factors for illness
4. Determine an appropriate treatment protocol for a sick neonate and select safe and effective medications

For More Information:
Dr. Erin Runcan is a Clinical Professor in Theriogenology and Reproductive Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She completed her residency training at the University of Florida in 2012 and is a board-certified specialist in Theriogenology. Following her residency, she served for three years in private small animal general practice before joining the faculty at OSU in 2015. Dr. Runcan has a special interest in canine reproduction and perinatology. She has been an invited speaker at breed club meetings, National Specialties, and veterinary conferences and is passionate about strengthening the relationship between breeders and veterinarians through education. Outside of work, Dr. Runcan breeds and shows Akitas in performance and conformation events and is a member of the Akita Club of America where she also serves on the health and genetics committee.
