Global FAST Scan
Ultrasound for the General Practitioner and Emergency Care as Part of Your Exam and Extension of Your Stethoscope

This talk will cover the fundamentals of AFAST®, TFAST® and Vet BLUE® that when combined as a single exam are called Global FAST®. These formats are standardized and achievable for all levels of ultrasound. The talk will cover everyday cases with everyday applications for the general practitioner to the ER vet to the clinical specialist. The importance of integrating Global FAST information will be emphasized. Global FAST® is our new core skill and has been published in Mattoon’s Small Animal Diagnostic Ultrasound, Ettinger’s most recent edition of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Veterinary Clinics of North America, and the Clinical Veterinary Advisor. Recently, Dr. Greg Lisciandro was awarded the Bourgelat Award by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of small animal veterinary medicine.

Learning Objectives:

Talk 1 - Introduction to AFAST® - Its Target-organ Approach and Abdominal Fluid Scoring System
· Understand its 5 views and the Focused Spleen
· Understand the AFAST®-applied abdominal fluid scoring system
· Understand its weak versus strong fluid positive model
· Understand its small volume versus large volume principles

Talk 2 - Introduction to TFAST® - Its Use for Pericardial and Pleural Effusion and Its Fundamental Echocardiography

· Understand its 5 views and their strengths for pneumothorax, pericardial and pleural effusion
· Understand how to accurately diagnose pericardial effusion
· Understand how to accurately diagnose pleural effusion
· Understand the differences in the appearance of the heart from the left and right side
· Understand the clinical utility of the fundamental short and long axis views of the heart

Talk 3 - Introduction to Vet BLUE® - Its Regional Pattern-based Approach, Its Wet versus Dry Lung Principles, and Its Signs of Consolidation
· Understand its regional pattern-based approach for imaging and interpretation
· Understand wet versus dry lung
· Understand the Vet BLUE B-line Scoring System and Inherent Severity Score
· Understand its signs of consolidation - Shred, Tissue, Nodule, and Wedge Sign
· Understand its advantages over radiography and its use as a monitoring tool

Dr. Gregory Lisciandro, Dipl. ABVP, Dipl. ACVECC, received his DVM, Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine, completed an internship, The Animal Medical Center, New York City, and an emergency and critical care residency, Emergency Pet Center, San Antonio, Texas. He developed and published the clinical utility of AFAST®, its target-organ approach and its fluid scoring system, TFAST®, and Vet BLUE® (veterinary brief lung ultrasound exam), the first veterinary proactive lung ultrasound format. He advocates their use combined as our 3rd standardized veterinary ultrasound format named Global FAST® while authoring over 20 peer-review related clinical studies. He has served as an ACVECC At-large Regent, and a member of the ACVECC Education Guidelines, Student Certification, and Scientific Committees. He is founder and past president of the International Veterinary Point-of-care Ultrasound Society and is currently serving as their Executive Director (www.IVPOCUS.org). He has been practicing for over 30-years with about half in general practice and half in emergency and critical care, most recently as Chief of Emergency Medicine and Critical Care, Emergency Pet Center. Currently, he is a consultant for Hill Country Veterinary Specialists and CEO of FASTVet.com, specializing in Global FAST® and point-of-care ultrasound training. He is editor and chapter author of the textbook Focused Ultrasound Techniques for the Small Animal Practitioner, Wiley ©2014 translated in 6 languages – English, Spanish, Greek, Japanese, Chinese and Polish and its 2nd Edition, Point-of-care Ultrasound Techniques for the Small Animal Practitioner, Wiley ©2021. He has lectured and directed Global FAST® scanning workshops around the world and continues to lead in publishing clinically relevant, pointof-care and FAST ultrasound research. Most recently, Dr. Lisciandro was given the prestigious 2023 Bourgelat Award by the British Small Animal Veterinary Association for outstanding international contributions for the advancement of veterinary medicine.
